Lee’s Summit CARES To Sponsor Holly Festival Craft Fair Nov. 10 And 11

October 13, 2012

Lee’s Summit CARES will sponsor the annual Holly Festival Craft Fair Nov. 10 and 11 at Bernard Campbell Middle School, 1201 NE Colbern Road. The fair is a benefit for the Lee’s Summit Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program.

The Holly Festival includes more than 80 craft booths as well as a concession stand, bake shop and door prizes. The fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 10 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 11. Admission is free.

Thanks to numerous volunteers and donations from the local community, all proceeds from the Holly Festival go to the Lee’s Summit DARE Unit to purchase educational materials that reinforce the DARE lessons. The popular local event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for DARE since the first Holly Festival in 1994.

In the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District, DARE is taught in second-, fourth- and sixth-grades in elementary schools and to seventh-graders in middle schools. Classroom instruction is provided by specially trained police officers. In addition to teaching the anti-drug abuse lessons, the officers develop positive relationships with the students and school staff members.

The fundraiser attracts 5,000 to 8,000 customers each year. Anyone wanting to donate to the fundraiser is also invited to send checks to Lee’s Summit CARES, 901 NE Independence Ave, Lee’s Summit, 64086. Checks should be made out to Lee’s Summit CARES.

Volunteers may sign up to help at the event by visiting http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080F44ADA92AA31-holly.
