Rachel Brown Wanted Public’s Help in Solving Case

Rachael Townsend Brown

Rachel Brown, Lee’s Summit’s prosecuting attorney reported to authorities on December 3, 2009 that her pregnant, thoroughbred mare had been shot in the leg.  The story was reported on at least one local TV station, as well as in the Tribune.  Brown had been boarding the mare, named Always Precious, and two other horses at a location near Pleasant Hill in Cass County.  She discovered the horse’s serious injury when she went to visit her horses during her lunch break from her job at Municipal Court, approximately 30 minutes away.  Cass County sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene to investigate.

In an interview with KMBC–TV’s Peggy Breit, Brown said, “Horses will kick and they’ll hurt each other and break legs; but to have an open wound is what led me to suspect something.”  Breit said Brown was determined to find answers and that she wanted the public’s help.  Brown added, “By all means if someone is aware of any foul play, please let the Cass County Sheriff’s Department know.”

Precious’ wounds were so severe that she had to be euthanized.  An autopsy was performed, and the injury was found to be a compound fracture of the tibia, a common problem for thoroughbreds.  Reading from the case file, Sgt. Robert Hendricks of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said, “There was no gunshot.  There were no fragments, and we had no reason to suspect a gunshot.”  Detective Susan Lett was assigned to the case at the time.  She said, “The horse did have an open hole on the inside of her leg; but it was not from a gunshot.  The case has been closed for some time; but it’s very sad anytime an animal gets injured.”

Several calls to Brown from the Tribune have not been returned.

Are you sure that horse didn't get out and get hit by a car or something? I was going up highway 7 the night of December 3rd, about 11 pm, and saw southbound cars pulling off to the side of the road. I was going northbound, so slowed to try to see what was going on. It was just a few yards north of the east turnoff to Hwy 150. As I went by the cars which were off to the side, I glanced in my rear view mirror. A horse walked across the road not TWO FEET behind my Prius! I saw other cars coming southbound and tried to flash my lights to warn them. Could it have been Ms. Brown's horse, perhaps?
