Lee's Summit Planning Commission Moves One Step Closer To Approving A Fourth Wal-Mart On 291 Highway
January 19, 2013

The first Wal-Mart in Lee’s Summit was located on the corner of 3rd Street and Ward. Upon that Wal-Mart’s move to its current location on 291 Highway and Tudor Road, the previous building sat empty for a prolonged period of time unwanted and unused, frankly an eyesore to the public.
It’s inevitable that Wal-Mart is a successful, growing American franchise, and Lee’s Summit wants to become the home of not one but two of these Wal-Mart SuperStores, complete with a pharmacy, auto center, garden center and market.
The Planning Commission voted 5-2 on January 8 to approve the new Wal-Mart plans to be brought in front of the City Council. These $25 million plans include rezoning to allow a green-field development for a Wal-Mart and two pad sites on 24 acres at the northwest side of Missouri 291 and Missouri 150. The City Council will meet to discuss these plans on February 7.
Christine Bushyhead and other members of the project team spoke at the January 8 meeting about issues and clarification with the development plans of the new Wal-Mart. This included traffic regulations, signage, parking lot light poles and tree removal/addition along with other aesthetic concerns.
Colene Roberts, one of the opposing Planning Commission members, brought up the fact that there are already three other Wal-Marts on the 291: one in Harrisonville, one in Independence, and one the one already in Lee’s Summit. She fears that one of Lee’s Summit’s Wal-Marts will eventually become unsuccessful on the stretch of highway.
“There’s no investment long term or short term,” Roberts said.
However, this new Wal-Mart will be advanced and economically friendly with a compost system, a bike-friendly parking lot and a high-tech set of LED parking lot lights. The building itself will be constructed with premium material that will sustain its quality for years to come. The color scheme of the complex will be composed of earth tones that compliment surrounding businesses on 291 South.
Bushyhead is very proud of the plans the project team has developed and hopes for the best when they are brought in front of the City Council next month.
