On Sunday, 11/18/2012 at 4:01 p.m. officers
with the Lee’s Summit Police Department responded
to the address of 204 NE Orchard Street in regards to a shooting.

Initial reports indicated that the victim was shot during a disturbance in the front yard of the residence.

Officers quickly evacuated the victim and witnesses and established a secure perimeter around the house after it was reported that the suspect had retreated into the house and was still armed.

Officers with the Emergency Services Squad as well as the Explosives and Ordinance Unit (EOD) were called to the scene to assist with the operation.

As information was gathered from witnesses, it was learned that a 1-month old infant was also inside the residence with the suspect.

Officers worked to initiate contact with the suspect so that the child’s location and status could be verified.

When officers were unable to establish contact with the suspect, a robot was deployed inside the residence.

The robot, equipped with cameras and microphones was able to quickly locate the child unharmed in the residence.

A team of officers entered the home and removed the infant safely from the house.

The robot was then able to locate the suspect inside the residence approximately thirty minutes later.

After speaking with the suspect, he agreed to surrender and was taken into custody without incident.

The shooting victim was transported to an area hospital where his condition is listed as life threatening.

The suspect, a white male in his sixties remains in police custody.

The Lee’s Summit Police Department was assisted during the operation by members of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol and also the Lee’s Summit Fire Department.
