Looking for a great party to beat the winter blues? “Party like a Plunge Star and Take the Polar Plunge” for Special Olympics Missouri. Since its inception 16 years ago, 15,912 Missourians have taken the plunge in frigid lakes across the state raising $3,167,249.
If making the splash isn’t for you, become a fan and pledge your support to one of these brave souls. The Kansas City Area Plunge will be January 29, at Longview Lake beginning at noon.
The Lee’s Summit Police Department is proud of the support it has given to Special Olympics over the years through The Torch Run, a yearlong law enforcement initiative designed to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics and its athletes.
Cops on Top and Tip a Cop
Long time Special Olympics support Officer Mark Wiesemann has been very involved with the Torch Run. The impact his involvement has made on him personally is obvious when you talk with him, “Coming into the stadium…I had to make my way to the other side to hand out medals. It took me nearly an hour as the athletes swarmed to shake my hand, greet me, have their picture taken with me…they recognized the uniform and our involvement. The joy with which they participate is contagious.” Buoyed by this enthusiasm, Mark has decided to take his support to a new level, a higher level, actually the roof of Habaneros, 1008 SE Blue Parkway.
On January 19th beginning at 11 a.m. he will climb to the roof and remain there until he reaches his goal of $5,000. Visit his Special Olympics website at www.somo.org/lscopsontop to make your donation and get Mark off the roof.
Also supporting Mark are his fellow officers who will be waiting tables and serving food at the restaurant the following day from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. Stop in for lunch, stop in for dinner, you can’t tell who your server may be; it might even be Chief Piccinini. All tips and donations will go to Special Olympics and will help to get Mark off the roof.
Super Plunger ‘Big Head’ Brian Wilson
Sgt. Brian Wilson has developed quite a reputation as a “super plunger.” Once again he will lead a team who enters the water once each hour for a 24 hour period beginning Friday, Jan 28th at noon. That’s right, these dedicated souls spend 24 plus hours at Longview Lake in freezing temperatures, and a great deal of that time WET. For Brian the knowledge that “the valiant effort warms the hearts of thousands of athletes who have the opportunity to train and compete in year round sports,” keeps him warm. Brian also has a reputation as the top fund raiser for this event. His goal for 2011 is $15,000 and he has several events planned leading up to the actual Plunge.
Tuesday, January 18, Jerry’s Bait Shop will donate 10 percent of sales to the Super Plunge.
Saturday, January 22 will be a special Freezin’ for a Reason Ride. The fun starts at Gail’s Harley Davidson (71Hwy/ 150 Hwy) at 11 a.m. Lunch and registration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The ride will leave Gail’s Harley Davidson at 1:30 p.m. with a police escort. The ride will take the group to the Longview Lake Beach for a group photo. The ride will continue to the Historic Downtown Lee’s Summit area and conclude at Stuey McBrew’s where fun will continue with an auction.
This extreme ride is open to all motorcycles, jeeps, convertibles, hot rods, and anything that you can drive your big heart to help the Special Olympics support the athletes in our area.
Also on January 22, Crossfit Lee’s Summit will be hosting a Athletes 4 Athletes competition. Tuesday, January 25, Red Door Wine Store is hosting a wine tasting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a portion of their sales going to Special Olympics.
Every Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday during January, Mirchies is donating a portion of their sales to Special Olympics. For more information on all of Brian’s activities or to make a donation, you can visit his Special Olympics website at www.somo.org/bigheadwilson
Bill Morrow and Moose Moose is a working dog with the Missouri Search and Rescue K9 Unit. He works with the Lee’s Summit Police Department and has worked with the Lee’s Summit Underwater Recovery Team who are on site to ensure the safety of the 24 hour plungers. Moose is very proud of the work he does with these groups and enjoys adding his support to the worthy cause. Moose has received special permission to take the plunge during the 24 hour Super Plunge. And this year he has even convinced his trainer Bill Morrow to take his first plunge.
