Public Works Crews Prepare for another round of snowfall Wednesday into Thursday By Melissa Bedford Fears Public Communications Coordinator
After two weeks of snow removal activity, the City of Lee’s Summit’s snow removal crews are preparing for yet another winter storm, accumulations of 4 – 6 inches from snowfall are expected to begin Wednesday morning and continue overnight into Thursday. Winds are expected to increase Wednesday night with blowing and drifting snow developing and continuing until Friday.
Blowing and drifting snow as well as the intensity and duration of the storm will mean City crews will have to repeatedly plow arterials and collectors. Also, with temperatures dipping below freezing, the salt used to treat ice and snow events will not be as effective. The City primarily uses 100% salt to treat ice and snow events, but may use a salt/sand mix if conditions warrant.
MONITORING WEATHER: The City’s Public Works Operation division will continue monitoring weather events closely in order to be ready to plow and treat all 976 lane miles of City streets within a reasonable timeframe after the precipitation ends.
According to the forecast, flurries and light snow become possible by Wednesday with chances (of snow) increasing through the morning. A period of moderate to occasionally heavy snow is expected Wednesday afternoon into the early evening as the main disturbance passes through the area. Snow will taper back to flurries and light snow by late evening and continue overnight.
CREW SCHEDULE: (View city-wide Snow Routes Map) City crews will work continuous two, 12-hour shifts to plow and treat snow-covered streets after the precipitation ends prioritizing the removal of snow from streets in the following manner:
■Arterial routes ■Collector routes ■Residential streets and cul-de-sacs See the sidebar for examples of arterials and collectors.
Examples of Arterial Roads: ■Todd George ■Langsford Road ■Pryor Road ■Woods Chapel Road Examples of Secondary Collector Roads: ■Clubhouse Drive ■Vista Drive ■Murray Road ■Velie Road ■Bridlewood Drive ■Regatta Drive ■Fairway Homes Crews are staffed 24 hours a day during snow and ice events and work on 12-hour rotating shifts during the week, weekends, and holidays. It is important for residents to remember that the time in which it takes to plow a street may be delayed based on the intensity, severity, and duration of a storm.
HELP US HELP YOU! Here’s how residents can aid in the snow plowing process:
■Remove all vehicles from streets to prevent a delay in clearing roadways. ■Shovel snow to the right of your driveway. This will lessen the amount of snow left at the entrance of your driveway by the snow plow. It is also helpful to remember the City does not clear private streets, shopping areas, and certain private neighborhoods. Also, the City does not clear or remove windrows from in front of driveways and mailboxes.
