Four Lee’s Summit R-7 School District bus drivers captured awards in the regional school bus safety competition, held June 1 at Lee’s Summit North High School. Debra Piatt was awarded first place while Mike Sacher and Jennifer Stuerke tied for third place.

A measurement taken during the offset alley backing event determined the third-place medal, which was awarded to Mike Sacher. Debra Piatt, Mike Sacher and Jennifer Stuerke were awarded medals for the best team scores in the competition. Brian Seydlitz, a first-year driver for the school district, placed ninth in the competition.

The competition consists of a test to determine defects on a bus, a written test and a nine-event driving skills test. As part of the tests, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) representative secretly planted phony bombs on the defect buses.

At the end of the event, Timothy Tracy talked to the competitors about the importance of thoroughly inspecting their buses each day before transporting children.
