Since the summer of 2004, Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation has partnered with the City of Lee’s Summit to produce the annual Legacy Blast Fireworks Extravaganza at Legacy Park.
While last year’s celebration was almost rained out, this year’s beautiful weather lead to a high attendance rate of 20,152.
With the gates opening at 6 p.m., all four venues were filled with free entertainment until 9:15 that evening.
The Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation Board provided the pre-firework entertainment such as face painters, balloon artists, a stilt walker, and bounce houses through Creative Carnivals.
Concession stands were located throughout the park. The Lee’s Summit Girls Softball Association had a concession stand at the softball venue; the football venue has funnel cakes, Hawaii Ice, and Jazzy B’s BBQ by Fair Foods Catering; The Lee’s Summit Soccer Association held their concession stand in the soccer venue, and Kiwanis and Coaches Kettle Corn was at the baseball venue.
At 9:15, the gates closed, venues shut down, and lights were turned off in preparation for the 9:30 fireworks show.
A new soundtrack is chosen every other year by the Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation Department. The soundtrack is sent over to Wald & Co, All American Display Fireworks.
“They actually choreograph the firework show to the music,” Legacy Blast supervisor, Jodi Bell, said.
“The day of the event, our radio station 94.9 does a live remote from the venue and sends out an engineer to link up with the fireworks provider to air the show live.”
The choreographed firework’s show is sponsored by the City of Lee’s Summit and the Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation Board.
