When the Tribune learned that school busses were not being allowed to deliver children to their homes at Sage Crossing Apartments for awhile on December 15, we immediately reported to the scene and saw several police officers with their guns drawn. No other reporters were present. There were numerous police vehicles, both marked and unmarked, in the vicinity of 520 NE Howard.  However, the Lee’s Summit Police Department’s public information officer was not available, and residents were hesitant to talk, so details were sketchy. Although there had been an attempted robbery and two suspects had been taken into custody, the investigation remained open when the Tribune went to press last week, with further information not yet available.

A male victim had been approached by several suspects about a previous debt. When he refused to give the perpetrators money, he was assaulted. The two assailants taken into custody that day remain in jail, and others are still being sought.

Shawn Burkhalter, a 22 year-old resident of Kansas City, MO, was charged with 1st degree robbery and armed criminal action.

Kevin L. Jones, a 21-year-old from St. Joseph was charged with 1st degree robbery, armed criminal action, burglary and stealing. Bond for both suspects was set at $100,000 cash.

If you have information regarding this crime, call the Lee’s Summit Police TIPS Hot Line at 969-1752.
