About 2 a.m. on Saturday morning (2/01/04) in the 600 block of NE Meadow Lane, police Public Information Officer Sgt. Chris Depue reports that an altercation between two men that knew each other escalated into a shooting incident. The sole victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The victim has been identified by police as Jason K. Starchman, aged 29 of Kansas City.
Sgt. Depue said in a statement that "…the prosecutor’s office has reviewed the initial investigation and has asked for additional information…As such the suspect has been released pending further investigation."
Officers arrived at the location of the shooting and found the victim lying in the front yard. Officers stated that a man in his 40’s surrendered without incident.
In an interview with KCTV Sgt. Depue stated that a group of three people had been out together for the evening. After they returned to the residence an argument ensued, possibly regarding "…where people were going to stay for the evening."
