Lee’s Summit Writer Gets Published.
June 21, 2011
By Tribune staff
Lisa Ann Britz, Lee’s Summit writer and photographer, published the first book in her children’s book series about pollinators, Gems from the Garden. The book is titled, “Welcome Back North.” It is a group of poems that illustrates how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.
“Nature is a learning playground. The lessons are right in front of you waiting to be discovered and investigated. You just need to take the time to notice them,” said Lisa.
The images in the book Lisa photographed herself in her garden. She is a member of the Pollinator Partnership, a group that works to educate people about pollinators and how to protect them. The plants in her garden are grown specifically to attract pollinators, such as butterflies, bumble bees, and moths. A portion of the sale of each book goes to the organization.
“Writing has always been a part of my photography process. Every picture tells a story. When I take a photo, I log the shot, and write down the thoughts I have of the photo when I take it. After I download the photos, I go back over my notes and write the poem to go with the image,” said Lisa. She will read from her book during story-time at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 20, at the Border’s Bookstore in Lee’s Summit at 1664 Chipman Road. Books will be available for purchase at that time. “My books are geared for children. Poetry lessons from nature to educate, not to fear, bugs and to understand their important purpose in our ecosystem.”
Lisa credits two people specifically for igniting the desire in her to publish her work.
“Thanks to Chet Smith, the President of the Lee’s Summit Scribes writing group. His generosity with his time, and having a place where writers can meet to support, educate, and encourage each other has been extremely important to me. We’ll make him proud one author at a time, one book at a time,” said Lisa.
She also wanted to thank Susan Faulkenberry, an R-7 Lee’s Summit kindergarten teacher.
“She plants a seed deep in each of her students, and others like myself, and inspires us to reach for our dreams, and make them realities,” said Lisa.
Books may also be purchased from Lisa’s web site at: www.PassionForPollinators.com.
Lisa will have her first official book signing at the same Borders bookstore on Saturday, August 6, at 12 p.m. She self published the book, and is planning to continue to self-publish the series.
