Life in Belgium An Insight to Life as an Lee's Summit Exchange Student

May 15, 2010
By Jamie Bronder, Lee's Summit Sunrise Rotary Exchange Student

Being a Rotary Exchange Student is not something every teenager has the opportunity to experience; however, it is the chance of a lifetime that every kid should be fighting to get.

Living in the tiny country of Belgium there are quite a lot of students who want to travel abroad and experience the world. This past weekend I was asked to represent the United States of America at a Rotary activity. This event was held for the Belgian students who will be traveling overseas in the fall. I believe my strong mid-western background was a good opportunity to represent an all-American lifestyle. The Belgians were amazed that cheerleaders and football teams at school actually exist and high school musical is not really that exaggerated from real life. As one of two Americans selected to speak to the students, I felt honored to represent not only Missouri but Lee's Summit as well. I think I gave us a good reputation.

When I think about my life one year ago as a graduating senior from Lee's Summit North, I could never have dreamed of who I would become. I was the only student in Lee's Summit to even leave on exchange, in comparison with the seven seniors from my Belgian school of only eighty kids in my graduating class. I've been living in Liege, Belgium for nine months; but, it feels like nine weeks. In nine short months I have not only learned to speak a beautiful language, french, but I have gained life-long friends and three new families. I can honestly say that this experience has been unforgettable, life-changing, and eye-opening. My only hope in finishing my year abroad and returning home to Lee's Summit is to inspire other LS students to seize such an amazing opportunity such as this. I cannot thank The Lee's Summit Sunrise Rotary enough for allowing me such an incredible life adventure.
