Lightning Strike Damages Lee's Summit Home
By Jim Eden Assistant Chief, LSFD
On Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at 7:30 PM, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 4112 SW Leeward Drive. The homeowner reported a possible lightning strike to the house with smoke coming from the roof.
When the fire department arrived, light smoke was coming from the roof of a two-story, single family residence. All occupants were outside.
Firefighters entered the house and located a fire burning in a concealed space in the attic. Crews were able to contain the fire to a small area of the attic area above a second bathroom. The fire was under control by 8:25 PM.
The remainder of the house sustained only minor smoke damage. The fire was confirmed to have been started by a lightning strike.
