LSHS Girls Soccer Team To Host Annual Melanie Grace Kickin' Against Cancer

April 26, 2014

The annual "Melanie Grace Kickin' Against Cancer" Benefit Soccer game is slated for May 6 at the Lee’s Summit High School Soccer Complex. The Lady Tigers will don the "purple jersey," and battle conference foe Blue Springs in the annual match.

The first matchup kicks off at 4 p.m. with the C-team game, followed by the junior-varsity match versus Blue Springs at 5:30 p.m., and culminating in the varsity match versus Blue Springs at 7 p.m. The event will go on rain or shine.

In 2007, the LSHS women’s soccer team began what would become a wonderful community tradition, a memorial benefit commemorating a young Lee’s Summit girl’s battle to kick cancer, honoring her memory by selecting a Kansas City metro area individual facing his/her own cancer battle to be the recipient of monies generated by the event.

Lee’s Summit resident Melanie Grace Lindmark was born Aug. 27, 1998. In November 2002 she was diagnosed with an extremely rare cancer when she was only 4 years old and passed away March 31, 2005, after a long and courageous battle. She was an amazing girl and touched everyone’s lives that she met, especially those at Lee’s Summit High School. The Melanie Grace Kickin’ Against Cancer benefit is held each spring and relies on community help to make a difference for a local young person.

This year the Lady Tigers have selected one of their own, Jonas Borchert, a LSHS sophomore as the recipient. Jonas was diagnosed in middle school with Ewing’s sarcoma.

"We hope you, your family, your team, your friends and/or your business will join us on May 6 to celebrate Melanie’s life and support Jonas and his family as he battles to kick his cancer," said Dawn Seymour, organizer of the event.

The event will include a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and Melanie Grace T-shirt sales. The Chick Fil A cow will also be on hand to ‘referee’ a goal shooting contest and various other activities are planned. Last year’s event raised $7,000 with the help of the community and local businesses.
