MoDOT Reduces Speed Limits on Route 50 in Lee's Summit

May 2, 2011

Missouri Department of Transportation will reduce speed limits to 60 mph on Route 50 from Todd George to the I-470 interchange, beginning tomorrow. (Tuesday, May 3, 2011)

Last year, Route 50 from the intersection of Route 291 north to the north side of the I-470 interchange, was marked a Travel Safe Zone, with increased enforcement to curb aggressive, distracted and careless driving, including speeding, failure to signal lane changes, following too close and failure to yield - all main contributors to crashes. Fines in this area are also double.

In addition to a lower speed limit, crews began installing guard cable along this same section on May 2. Guard cables, and the posts that keep them in place, can deflect and halt vehicles that leave the roadway heading for oncoming traffic. Guard cables can't prevent accidents, but they are highly successful in minimizing the severity. Nearly all encounters with guard cables are non-injury, property damage only. Many go unreported. The guard cables snare a wayward vehicle, keeping it in the median and away from other traffic.

Seriously? Lowering the speed limit is not gonna slow drivers down. and putting up those speed limit LED signs will not help either cause all they do is show you how fast your going and 90% of the time their not even accurate
