New Leadership On Lee’s Summit City Council: Diane Forte
April 12, 2014
By Karen Messerli
On April 24 for the second time in Lee's Summit's history three women will be sworn in and take their seats on the Lee's Summit City Council bringing new leadership and fresh perspectives to the community. In Tuesday elections, Diane Forte won in District 1 with a stunning victory at 69%. Trish Carlyle carried District 2 in a tightly won race with 35% and in District 3, Diane Seif overcame previous Councilmember Joe Spallo handily with a 57% win.
All three women are accomplished business women and have already served the community. All have been active with the Chamber of Commerce and are well known faces bringing new leadership, talents and fresh perspective to the City Council. With the issues currently facing the City they will all have to get up to speed quickly and be prepared to act on important decisions facing Lee's Summit.
Diane Forte, District 1, a small business owner for 35 years is prepared to make the hard business decisions necessary and believes in empowering city staff in the decision making while maintaining the best police and fire protection possible in the current budget. She is also actively involved with the Chamber and is a well-recognized face in activities in the community.
Susan Hendricks was the first woman elected to the City Council in 1975 serving one term followed by Karen Messerli being elected in 1989. This will be the first time since 1993 that three women have served on the City Council at the same time. Chere Chaney, Kay Ford and Karen Messerli all served for one year in 93 until 1994 when Messerli was elected as Mayor.
