No school board election after two file for two seats

Jan. 20, 2012

There’s no need for a school board election in April after two file for two seats.

Filing for R-7 Board of Education candidates closed on Jan. 17. Incumbents Pattie Buie and Ron Baker filed for re-election. Buie has served on the board since 2000. Baker has served since 2009. Board of Education members serve three-year terms.

State law allows school districts to forego an election when two candidates file for two positions on the Board of Education, which saves taxpayer dollars because the school districts do not have to pay their share of election-related expenses. The Board of Election candidates will not appear on the April 3 ballot, nor will any other Lee’s Summit R-7 issues.

Buie and Baker will be sworn in as returning Board of Education members.
