Prairie Township Fire Protection District Open House

Oct. 10, 2011

Displays and demonstrations from military, police, fire and medical agencies will be on display at the annual open house at the Prairie Township Fire Protection District (PTFPD) Saturday, October 15.

The open house is from 10 a.m. -4 p.m., with free food from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.  The fire station is at the intersection of Milton Thompson and Langsford Roads, just east of Lee’s Summit.

Visitors will see firsthand a flashover occur during a live fire demonstration at the district’s fire training facility.  A flashover, one of the most-feared phenomena among firefighters, is the near simultaneous ignition of all combustible material in an enclosed area.  PTFPD firefighters will perform an actual interior fire attack.  Additionally, a separate fire will be set inside the building to demonstrate the effectiveness of residential sprinkler systems.

Firefighters will also show how they dismantle an automobile to free a person trapped inside the twisted wreckage.  This demonstration will feature use of new battery-operated Hurst “jaws of Life”  rescue equipment.  PTFPD is the first fire department in the Kansas City metro area to put the state-of-the-art technology in service.

The Missouri National Guard will display several vehicles, including an ambulance, and will have a sniper team on hand.  An explosives demonstration will also be conducted.

The dangers of a motor vehicle collision will be brought to life by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s vehicle rollover simulator.

Officers from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department will be on hand, and Smokey Bear from the Missouri Department of Conservation will put in an appearance.

Visitors will also see arson detection and search and rescue dogs in action.  Activities for children will also be featured.
PTFPD provides fire protection and advanced life support ambulance services to a 32-square-mile area.
