Prescription Drug “Take Back” Event Results
October 13, 2012
On Saturday, September 29th, 2012, the Lee’s Summit Police Department participated in the National Take-Back Initiative to recover and dispose of unwanted and expired medications. The event was a cooperative effort between the Lee’s Summit Police Department, the US Drug Enforcement Administration and LS Cares. Residents were able to turn in unwanted and expired prescription and over the counter medications at one of three drop off locations in Lee’s Summit.
In previous take back events, which are conducted biannually, the total collection netted less than three-hundred pounds of medications. From this past event a total of 745 pounds of unwanted or expired medications were turned over to be properly disposed of. Through the response of residents and participating agencies such as the police department and LS Cares, Lee’s Summit collected the third highest weight for the state of Missouri, Missouri ranked first in medications recovered for a six state region.
At the completion of Saturday’s event all recovered medications were immediately turned over to a representative of the Drug Enforcement Administration for proper disposal. The next medication take back event is tentatively scheduled for April 2013 but additional information about the program may be obtained by visiting the website for the Drug Enforcement Administration at: http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/index.htm
