R-7 Board of Education approves changes in spring 2011 calendar allowing school to end before Memorial Day
February 24, 2011
Students to now attend school on March 11 and April 28 staff development days
The Lee's Summit R-7 School District Board of Education approved incorporating two make-up snow days into the 2010-11 calendar to allow school to end before the Memorial Day weekend this year. The decision was made at the Board's Feb. 24 meeting. Due to this winter’s unusually severe weather, the R-7 School District has missed a total of 10 snow days (as of Feb. 25). Traditionally, the district has made up all snow days after the last day of school (originally May 19).
The Board of Education's decision will change March 11 (the Friday before spring break) and April 28 (a Thursday that falls on the national Take Your Child To Work Day) from staff development days with no students attending to a regular school attendance day. By changing March 11 and April 28 to student attendance days, students will end their year on May 27, the Friday before the Memorial Day holiday. Without this change, the last day of school would have been June 1.
State law requires that school districts make up the first six snow days. Beginning with the seventh snow day, districts make up one day for every two days missed. Even though Feb. 25, the day after the Board of Education's decision, also was a snow day, the last day continues to be May 27.
Numerous parents have contacted R-7 school staff members requesting that district officials consider this type of change. District administration had been watching a bill filed in the Missouri General Assembly that would have "forgiven" approximately three days during the early February blizzard. State officials have recently indicated that it is very unlikely that this bill will result in legislation that would allow districts to avoid making up the snow days state-wide.
With this information from state officials and with spring approaching, the timing was right to make adjustments to the 2010-11 calendar, which requires Board of Education action.
