LS area theatre students collect 7,704 pounds of food for needy families through food drive

Student members of International Thespian Society (ITS) troupes from Lee's Summit High School, Lee's Summit North High School, Lee's Summit West High School and Summit Christian Academy collected approximately 7,704 pounds of canned and dry goods for Lee's Summit Social Services on Oct. 31.

The food was collected by the theatre students from the four schools as part of the Thespian Society's Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat program. Students from the four schools participated in the drive, which has become an annual tradition. The theatre students collected around 1,400 more pounds this year than in 2016.

LSHS Hosts Fifth Annual Veterans Day Assembly

Lee’s Summit High School staff and students commemorated Veterans Day with the school’s fifth annual Veterans Day Appreciation Program, held Nov. 10. A total of 69 veterans from all branches of the military were honored during two student assemblies.

The all-school event included performances by Sounds of Summit, the Symphonic Band and the Concert Choir and presentation of the flags and a flag-folding ceremony by the LSHS Air Force Junior ROTC.

Diane Wolz Receives LS R-7 Learning for Life Award for November

Diane Wolz was named the Lee’s Summit R-7 Learning for Life Award winner for November. She is a library media clerk at Longview Farm Elementary. 

The award is presented to one employee each month who is nominated by co-workers and selected by a staff committee.

LSN Cheer Squad Brings Home their Fourth State Championship Title in a Row

After three consecutive first place titles in a row, the Lee’s Summit North Cheer Squad took the mat in Columbia on Sunday to, yet again, compete at state and were once again successful in leaving with that first place trophy.

“I feel extremely proud when I watch the team work as hard as they do. Winning our 2nd state championship was an amazing feeling. Adding the 3rd was an even better feeling and now adding the 4th makes me feel so incredibly lucky to be a part of this program,” head coach Natalie Forte said.

Red Ribbon Week at Trailridge Elementary

The Lee’s Summit R-7 School District hosted a community kick-off for Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23 at Trailridge Elementary School. Red Ribbon Week is a national recognition to promote healthy lifestyles, including avoiding illegal use of alcohol and drugs.

Dr. Jeff Miller of Lee’s Summit R-7 announces retirement

Dr. Jeff Miller, Lee’s Summit R-7 School District associate superintendent of human resources, announced his retirement from the school district, effective June 30, 2018. His request for retirement was approved at the Oct. 19 Board of Education meeting.

“My heart and soul have been and will continue to be with the Lee’s Summit schools and Lee’s Summit community,” Dr. Miller said.

LSNHS PTSA to host Safe Halloween Oct. 31

Lee's Summit North High School PTSA will host Safe Halloween from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31 at LSNHS, 901 NE Douglas. The event is free for all children living within the Lee's Summit R-7 School District.

Children are invited to trick-or-treat in the school's commons, which will be decorated for Halloween and will include approximately 30 to 40 booths. LSNHS students, dressed in Halloween costumes, will staff the booths, handing out candy to the children.

BCMS Receives Grant

Bernard Campbell Middle School recently partnered with the NFL’s Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative to encourage healthy nutrition and physical activity. Thanks to the efforts of students during the 2016-17 school year, the school received a $500 grant from the Midwest Dairy Council to continue this work. Pictured are several BCMS student athletes after hearing of the grant.

Lee’s Summit West High School will host its annual Financial Aid Night from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at the school’s performing arts center.
