R-7 School District extended library program helps students be successful readers during summer months

The Lee's Summit R-7 School District's elementary library extended-hours summer program continues to be a success among students and families. Seven elementary school library media centers are offering extended summer hours this June and July to encourage reading among local children. Students from all R-7 elementary schools are welcome to check out books at any of the seven locations.
Extended library times are afternoons and early evenings beginning June 8 and running through July 30 with each of the school libraries open from 3 to 7 p.m. one day each week, Monday through Thursday. Specific schedules for schools are Mondays for Highland Park Elementary and Longview Farm Elementary; Tuesdays for Meadow Lane and Greenwood Elementary Schools; Wednesdays for Lee's Summit and Pleasant Lea Elementary Schools; and Thursdays for Westview Elementary School.
Family story time is also offered each evening at 5:30 p.m. at all seven schools.
This is the third year in a row that R-7 elementary schools have offered this program, and district staff members have been pleased with the results. Research shows that children who read during the summer are more likely to read at or above their grade level and score higher on achievement tests.
Several R-7 schools throughout the district are also participating in the Bag of Books program. With parent permission, students may check out a bag of books and keep them throughout the summer to further promote reading.
In addition, a number of R-7 elementary, middle and high schools are offering Summer Reading Challenges. Students receive a free book for each 1,000 or 1,500 pages read and recorded in their reading log. Students are bringing more detailed information home about all three reading programs from participating schools
