Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation Launches Annual Fund Drive To Purchase Google Chromebook Computers
August 25, 2012
The Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation recently launched its annual fund drive for 2012-13. The non-profit organization’s goal is to raise $275,000 this school year to purchase Google Chromebook computers for classroom use,to provide funding for Foundation grants and to continue to support the Foundation endowment.
A total of $200,000 is earmarked for the Google Chromebook computers. The Foundation and the R-7 School District will share in the cost to provide a 30-computer mobile Google Chromebook lab for each elementary, middle and high school. The computers will be located on charging carts so they can be easily accessed by classrooms throughout each school.
The annual fund drive is also designating $50,000 for the Foundation’s PEAK(Promoting Excellence and Knowledge) Grant program. PEAK Grants are awarded to teachers across the school district for classroom projects or programs which enhance curriculum and promote excellence and knowledge. Since its formation in 1993, the Foundation has awarded more than $561,000 in PEAK Grants to fund a total of 588 classroom projects.
In addition, $25,000 from the annual drive will go toward the Foundation’s endowment designed to help ensure educational success in the local community by building a fund for the future.
Over the last three years, the Educational Foundation has completed successful fund drives, reaching the goal each year. From 2009 through 2012, the annual fund drive’s emphasis was on providing audio-enhancement systems for kindergarten,first- and second-grade classrooms in all schools. Through the audio-enhancement system, teachers wear a microphone around their necks, and four ceiling-mounted speakers transmit the teacher’s voice to all areas of the classroom. Students do not miss out on hearing lessons clearly, which assists with the development of reading and language skills.
In addition to the audio-enhancement systems, the previous annual fund drives provided money for district-wide technology, PEAK Grants and the endowment fund.
The Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation is a 501c3 organization that raises, manages and distributes funds for educational programs that benefit students, staff and citizens of the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District. It is managed by a voting Board of Directors and non-voting Advisory Council composed of community members. During the last seven years, the Foundation has provided more than $6.5 million to help support numerous educational programs throughout the school district.
