By Janice Phelan, R-7 Community Relations Director
Several Lee's Summit area girls recently returned home, having spent a week immersed in learning the ins and outs of the life of a state legislator, holding political conventions and listening to speakers from various levels of local, county and state government. To cap off the experience, Anitra Evans of Lee's Summit West High School was named governor. Other Lee's Summit R-7 School District students attending Girls State were Rebecca Burandt, Sarah Bohlman, Rayce Heck, Karlie Swan, Catherine Jones and Olivia Jones. Girls State is a government education program for outstanding teenage girls that introduces them to the structure and functions of the state government. These youthful lawmakers caucus at the beginning of the session, organize into two political parties and conduct legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies, debating and voting. The citizens also receive special instruction in parliamentary procedure. American Legion Auxiliary units send girls to Girls State on the campus of University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Founded in 1919, the American Legion Auxiliary is the largest patriotic women’s service organization in the world, with nearly 1 million members. The organization sponsors volunteer programs on the national and local levels, focusing on three major areas: veterans, young people and the community.
