Several dozen students have taken their first steps to becoming internationally recognized artists by participating in a local competition sponsored by the Lee’s Summit Downtown Lions Club.
One month from today, five posters will be chosen out of 375,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 24th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.
The winning poster will advance to face stiff competition through the multiple district and international rounds of competition if declared the international grand prize winner. One grand prize winner and 23 merit awards winner will be selected. The one grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 national merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500.
Our club is cheering for our school district’s poster contestants in this year’s competition, and we hope that these children’s visions can be shared around the world. Students were chosen from the three middle schools in the district and two elementary schools. In future years, the President of the Downtown Lee’s Summit Lions Club has mentioned opening up the competition to other elementary schools as well. Local winners will be honored for their participation by the Lee’s Summit Downtown Lions Club at an event scheduled later in the year.
