The Lees Summit West girls cross country team won the Missouri Class 4 state team championship for the 5th year in a row. They outdistanced Columbia Rock Bridge High School by 47 points and won in dominating fashion, 77-124. “We had another excellent state meet winning by a huge margin over a very good Columbia Rock Bridge team. This year we were the underdog going into the state meet according to all the media sources in St. Louis and Columbia,” said head coach Jesse Griffin. “The only ones that thought we could win were the girls on our team and coaching staff. I knew if we ran as a team the girls would be in a good position. They have continually gotten better as the season has progressed. They stepped up big time when the money was on the line.”

The Lady Titans were led by three all-state performances. Kiersten West, sophomore, placed 10th in 19:42; Kennadee Williams, sophomore, placed 13th in 19:53; and Samantha Phillips, freshman, placed 22nd in 20:01 to round out the all-state performances. Sophomore Elizabeth Nolke narrowly missed the final all-state place by one second. She placed 26th in 20:14. Rounding out the Titans performances were Karen Brocket, sophomore, placing 43rd in 20:42; Olivia Chapman, sophomore, placing 102nd in 21:27; and Kayla West, sophomore, placing 115th in 21:38.

“One of our season goals as a team was to get a 60 second gap between our 1st and 5th finishers,” Griffin said. “We finally hit that goal right on the head for the first time on Saturday. I am just so excited for all these young girls that did the work to prepare them this year and that they believed in me as their coach to put them in the position to win.”

The Lady Titans own the Class 4 state record for consecutive team titles, which stands at five wins in a row. The next best consecutive titles mark in state history for Class 4 is two wins in a row by several schools. The over-all state record for consecutive wins in a row regardless of class goes to Penny High School in Class 1 at six consecutive titles. If the Titans can win next season, they will be tied for the overall Missouri consecutive state title mark regardless of classification.
