Peggy Chandler, registered nurse at Lee's Summit Elementary, Longview Farm Elementary and Cedar Creek Elementary, was recognized Aug. 3 by Healthe Kids, a comprehensive health-screening program. Brie Cantrell of Healthe Kids presented Ms. Chandler with the recognition during a Lee's Summit R-7 School District Health Services Department meeting.
Healthe Kids, funded through the First Hand Foundation, provides well-child screenings to children in schools and other community settings at no cost to the school district or children's families. Approximately 68 percent of the Lee's Summit Elementary students participated in the health screenings, held during September 2008 at the school.
Ms. Chandler was recognized for the high level of student participation at the in-school screening. In addition, almost 90 percent of students receiving a referral to a health-care provider completed this recommendation. Both Ms. Cantrell and Lee's Summit Elementary principal Katie Collier praised Ms. Chandler for her dedication to students and follow-through during the referral process.
Established through Cerner Corporation, the First Hand Foundation began in 1995 as a non-profit organization assisting individual children who have health-related needs when insurance and other financial resources have been exhausted. Healthe Kids was created by First Hand in an attempt to identify more children who could benefit from the program.
Children with health issues identified through Healthe Kids are referred to their primary-care physician for appropriate follow-up care. Children and families without access to these resources and who meet specific income guidelines may seek the assistance of the First Hand Foundation for the resources required to meet their immediate health-care needs.
