Summit Technology Academy students participate in Cerner internship program
Five students from Summit Technology Academy were selected for Cerner's summer internship program during 2009. Cerner Corporation, headquartered in the Kansas City Metro Area, is an international health care information technology corporation that specializes in providing hospitals and other medical organizations electronic medical records systems. The local students filled five of Cerner's 30 metro-area internship positions. Students selected included Joel Hermann and Matt Elliott, both Lee's Summit High School students, and Jordan Faust, Jamie McNeely and Chris Dunham, all Lee's Summit North High School. All five students were enrolled in computer science classes at Summit Technology Academy. Joel, Matt, Jordan and Chris completed their senior year of high school in 2008-09. Jamie is beginning her senior year this year. All five students were invited to return to Cerner next summer as interns; the four graduates as college interns and Jamie as a high school intern. Through the Cerner program, students work for 10 weeks as paid interns and participate in several Cerner corporate events for interns. Including college and high school students, Cerner employs around 160 interns annually with students working from various Cerner campuses. Interns and their families were invited to attend a July 30 presentation on the summer interns' experiences. To be selected, interns must meet a minimum grade-point average and participate in an interview process. Summit Technology Academy is a unique secondary school located within a high-tech business campus. The school prepares students to enter the workforce in technology fields or attend college in high-tech, high-demand areas. The academy is operated by the Lee's Summit R-7 School District and also enrolls students from other area high schools.
