Fifth-grade classes at Trailridge Elementary recently won $1,500 through the national Made By Milk Contest, a competition encouraging students to repurpose milk cartons.

Trailridge was one of three national winners in the elementary category. Students participating in the contest collected their school's milk cartons and used at least 100 of them intact to create a piece of art that fits the theme.

Also included in the contest was submission of a brief essay on how student teams would spend the money at their schools if they are selected as a winner. The winning teams were selected based on a judges' panel as well as online voting.

Trailridge Elementary submitted a total of three entries. The winning creation was called Mystery Milk Machine Hippie Van by the Milk Mustachers, students in Jayne Hartwig's class.

The class plans to use the contest award to purchase a rain barrel for the Trailridge Elementary garden with any leftover funds going to help purchase Google Chromebooks for the school.

The Made by Milk competition is sponsored by the Evergreen Packaging Company as a way to help educate children about responsible forestry, recycling and repurposing.
