Westview Elementary School Earns Top Recycling Award

June 2, 2012

Westview Elementary School was recognized May 17 by Deffenbaugh Industries as the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District’s top recycling school. The award is based on per-student recycling efforts, and students and staff were recognized during an end-of-the-year assembly.

The R-7 School District joined forces with Deffenbaugh Industries to launch a district-wide recycling program known as One Earth, One Chance in spring 2009. During the 2011-12 school year, R-7 schools and offices recycled 1,014,338 pounds of materials.

Westview Elementary was honored for recycling 60,807 pounds this school year, receiving$480 from Deffenbaugh. Through the district-wide recycling program, Deffenbaugh provides each school or other district facility with rebates for each ton collected. This money goes directly to the schools, and school staff members determine how to spend the money for their students. District-wide, R-7 schools received a total of $8,500 through recycling efforts during 2011-12.

This district-wide effort includes recycling of aluminum cans, plastic food and beverage containers, magazines, junk mail, office paper, cereal boxes, tissue boxes and similar paper products. Recycling containers are available throughout R-7 schools and facilities to make recycling easy for students and staff. In addition, each R-7 school and office has an outdoor bin that is available for citizens wanting to drop off materials. An additional benefit of the program is that all materials may be co-mingled in the same containers.

In addition to the financial benefits for the local schools, the enhanced recycling effort reduces the amount of trash going into the landfill. Schools also share recycling tips and information to help students, staff members and families become more environmentally aware.

Signs are posted by the outdoor bins as well as the in-school containers to specify exactly what may be recycled.

I commend the faculty and students for a great job in doing their part to reduce the amount of trash going into landfills. I work for the school district in my city and we just started a program last year in all schools recycling cardboard. I hope in the near future we will implement plastic and paper as well.
Great job and thank you for doing your part to save the Earth.
