Recall Petition Submitted For Councilman Rob Binney
March 7, 2013
By Tribune Staff
A Recall Petition has been submitted to the City Clerk for Lee’s Summit Councilman Rob Binney on Thursday, March 7th.
According to the city ordinance: “A recall petition shall be signed by qualified voters for that office in number equal to at least thirty percent (30%) of the total number of votes cast for the office in the election at which that office was elected.”
Amber Hodgson and four others-Miranda Finnerty, Julie Kirckpatrick, Wesley Riggs, and Patrick Powers- have signed this petition.
“We believe that Mr. Binney has contradicted platforms that he ran on. He indicated in his election Q and A that he was for mixed use development and redevelopment in Lee’s Summit, now he is supporting a single use retail space in an area that should be mixed-use, and is not infill or redevelopment.
This city needs to hold council members responsible. Lee’s Summit has a long record of city council members ignoring their constituency and voting with personal beliefs or third party influence. This needs to stop.
We deserve better than what we currently have. Regardless of how you feel about the current Wal-Mart decision, it is unacceptable to allow a council member to have full autonomy without consequence. He is a representative of the people, and should and will be held accountable to the people.” Hodgson said.
The petition states that: “The following voters request that Rob Binney be removed from office for failure to represent the best interest of his constituency and/or failure to represent the majority of the individuals that contacted him in regards to rezoning of property near 291 and Market St.”
City Clerk Denise Chisum has three days to codify the signatures and produce an official petition.
On Thursday, March 7th, Rob Binney said, “Tonight the Lee’s Summit City Council will vote on an ordinance for land-use zoning related to a Walmart development project. I have been informed that a committee has submitted a request to the City Clerk for a recall petition. I will not have my vote influenced by this action. After much testimony and discussion by both sides, I believe the zoning change and development are in the best interest of my district, and those I represent.”
