SCA Eighth Grade Speech & Debate Team Competes at Nationals

May 10, 2014

Two SCA 8th grade Speech and Debate duos, Connor Healy and Bo Redford, and Jacob Dixson and Luke Moehle are competing at the National Middle School Speech and Debate Tournament in Overland Park, Kansas this summer.  This event is the largest academic competition in the world.

“We are very excited to send these two teams to nationals,” said SCA Secondary Speech and Debate Teacher and Coach Mrs. Anne Mussatti.  “Both of these teams have done well in the metro area tournaments, and we look forward to seeing how they compete against students from across the nation,” Mrs. Mussatti said.

Both teams will compete in Public Forum Debate, the arm of Speech and Debate where students tackle current events.  This year's topic is Resolved: NATO should strengthen its relationship with Ukraine in order to deter further Russian aggression.

“The students are currently working to understand the history between the Ukraine and Russia, and we will then move on to understanding the relationship between NATO and Russia/Ukraine,” offered Mrs. Mussatti.
The middle school tournament is June 17-20 and will be held at Shawnee Mission North High School.  Semifinals and final elimination rounds will be held at the Sheraton Overland Park and Overland Park Convention Center.
