Lee’s Summit Police Department Letter of Appreciation 2012 Awarded to Jackson County Sheriff’s S.O.R.T. Unit during their annual Awards Ceremony held on February 28, 2013

On November 18, 2012, officers with the Lee’s Summit Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of NE Orchard in regards to a shooting. Officers Bill Hagerty, Matt Sewing and Jennifer Tambourine-Maynard were the first to arrive on the scene. They located the victim lying in the front yard suffering from a massive gunshot wound along with a witness. The witness indicated that the suspect had retreated back into the residence and may still be armed. As officers Todd Weger and John Keck arrived on scene and provided cover, Officers Hagerty, Sewing and Tambourine-Maynard evacuated the victim and witness to a safe location while exposing themselves to the suspect. Sgt. Rick Inglima arrived on scene and began gathering resources to assist in handling the situation. Members of the Emergency Services Squad arrived and quickly deployed to perimeter locations around the home. After several hours of attempting to negotiate with the suspect, members of the ESS squad made entry into the home and rescued a 2-month old infant from the home’s interior. The suspect ultimately surrendered several hours later and was taken into custody without incident. During the entire incident, communications staff played a pivotal role in disseminating information and keeping officers on the scene safe. For their assistance during the incident, members of the Jackson County Sheriff’s S.O.R.T. team are recognized with the Lee’s Summit Police Department’s Letter of Appreciation.
