Pictured on the right are: Firefighter Zac Nelson and retired Firefighter Martin Magers used their painting talents to update the Lee’s Summit Historical Society Museum The top walls took 2 coats of paint end the bottom took 3. The exhibits will be put together soon and in a short time the museum will reopen with all new programs and exhibits.
I think that Lee’s Summit should be called “The town with a big heart”. Everywhere you turn there are folks ready and willing to lend a helping hand. To me the folks with the biggest hearts in town are the Lee’s Summit Firefighters and especially the local IAFF 2195.Remember when you were a little kid and you would go to a movie and watch a big strong hero make everything alright again? Remember the Lone Ranger? How about big John Wayne? That is how I feel about our Firefighters. They are always on the alert to protect us. They have saved countless lives and have made a huge impact on this community because of their good works. We don’t know all of the good works they have done because like any other modest group they just go and do whatever it takes with no bragging.
Recently our trusty group of heroes has helped the Lee’s Summit Historical Society upgrade the Lee’s Summit Historical Society Museum with a fresh coat of paint and some amazing carpentry work thanks to Shawn Burgess and his crew. The museum had remained the same since 1991. The wall had cracks in them and trim was in need of paint. The thought of remodeling and painting was overwhelming. It was a dream of a life time for the Historical Society to paint the museum and have some carpentry work done. The Lee’s Summit Firefighters are steeped in their own rich local history. They have a sense of the importance of preserving stories and saving artifacts for all to enjoy.
Many years ago Smokey Dyer arranged for a donation to the museum of the important Sandborn Maps which are insurance maps that show the buildings of long ago and the cisterns that were used as a water source for fighting fires in the early days. The Historical Society will never be able to thank our brave heroes enough for their kindness and sharing of their talents. I think it time for a group hug for these guys and a big Historical Society smooch as well. The forever cute Mike Wallace, Martin Magers, Zac Nelson, the sometimes cranky Dave Smith, and angelic Captain Dan Manley are just a few of our local John Wayne’s. Others helped as well. Thank you to all.
