At 10:38 Sunday morning emergency personnel were dispatched to a parking lot in the Legacy Park sports venue on the report of a shooting. Through several 911 calls witnesses reported the sound of a single shot fired inside a vehicle and a lone male exiting and running from the parking lot in a southwest direction. A very detailed description of the suspect was obtained from witnesses and broadcast to responding police units. With the description officers were able to visually identify and apprehend the suspect, a twenty year old male, without further incident on Blackwell Road south of Scruggs, less than a mile from the parking lot. He was transported to the Lee’s Summit PD for questioning.
The victim, a nineteen year old male, sustained a single gunshot wound to the cheek but was able to speak and provided information at the scene as well. He was transported by Lee’s Summit fire department personnel to a metro area hospital for treatment. A more formal statement will be obtained from the victim when medically able.
Information provided at the scene indicates the suspect and victim, both Lee’s Summit residents, were known to one another and had mutual friends or acquaintances. The incident did not involve any of the citizens at the sports venue and all activities continued uninterrupted.
Further information regarding the victim and suspect is being withheld this early in the investigation and pending formal charges.
