The City of Lee’s Summit’s Public Works Department crews will continue to plow
January 20, 2011
The City of Lee’s Summit’s Public Works Department crews will continue to plow and treat secondary and residential streets throughout the day in response to snow that blanketed the City Wednesday into the early hours of today (Thursday).
The majority of the snow stopped at 1:30 a.m. today with a brief snow burst occurring between 3 and 4 a.m. The snow depth reading at Lee’s Summit Municipal airport indicated the City had 5 inches of total snowfall with isolated areas receiving up to 7 inches of snow. Crews began plowing streets when accumulations reached 1 inch at approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
Public Works crews are operating at a Level 3 and will continue to work on secondary and residential streets until all of these streets have been plowed and treated. All primary streets are expected to be plowed and treated this morning. Due to temperatures in the teens, winds in the 10 to 15 miles per hour range, and the dry, fluffy snow, blowing and drifting snow continue to be a concern.
Extremely cold conditions expected overnight Thursday and into Friday morning may harden snow and make the removal of snow extremely difficult in residential areas. To help with the melting of snow, crews will be using calcium chloride to treat the salt.
Residents can help crews by removing vehicles from streets to prevent delays in the snow removal process.
The Snow Desk, (816) 969-1870, will be staffed throughout the snow removal operation. Residents can receive updates about the City’s snow removal efforts by e-mail, cell phone text message and Web by visiting: http://local.nixle.com/city/mo/lee’s-summit/ . Nixle is a FREE service. Residents are also encouraged to say up-to-date on weather conditions, by listening to radio, watching television weather casts, and going online.
