The City of Lee’s Summit Winter Storm Update

February 22, 2013

Assistant Chief Jim Eden
Lee’s Summit Fire Department

Melissa Fears
Public Communications Coordinator

LEE’S SUMMIT, MO--With no snow forecast for the area today, the City’s snow removal crews are busy plowing and treating residential areas.  Now that most primary routes are plowed and treated, the snow removal crews will concentrate on plowing and treating residential areas throughout the City today, Feb. 22.

Residents are asked to please remove vehicles so that snow removal crews can plow and treat roadways.  This is especially critical on cul-de-sac bulbs.

Lee’s Summit received more than 11 inches of snow from the winter storm that began early Thursday morning and ended late that night after dropping an additional two to three inches of snow in Lee’s Summit and the metropolitan area.

City’s snow removal crews are working 12 hour rotating shifts to plow and treat roadways through Saturday night. With temperatures in the upper 20’s today, the snow will continue to melt because of the pre and post treatment of roadways with rock salt. Although some melting is expected to occur today, residents are asked to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. Thank you to everyone who stayed off the road on Thursday, which made our snow removal efforts easier.

Residents are reminded to help with the snow removal process by doing the following:

•    Remove vehicles from streets to prevent a delay and to improve the snow removal process.
•    Shovel snow to the side of your driveway to lessen the amount of snow left at the entrance of your driveway.
•    Remove snow from around fire hydrants near your property.

Other safety tips to remember:

•    Make sure that all exit doors are free of snow and can be opened in case of an emergency.
•    Ensure that snow is not blocking furnace exhaust vents.
•    Do not allow children to play in snow piles along the street. Snow plow operators cannot see children on, or inside of a tunneled snow pile.

The City will remain under a State of Emergency as snow removal operations continue and we monitor another developing winter storm is expected Sunday night and Monday, February 25th.

You may call the Snow Desk at (816) 969-1870. Normal business hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. During winter storm events, the Snow Desk operates 24 hours a day.
