Missouri Assistive Technology (MoAT) is a state program that supports people with all types of disabilities in being more independent in their daily activities through the use of adaptive equipment. Equipment ranging from computers with speech output for individuals who are blind, specially adapted toys for children with limited hand movement and amplified and text telephones for persons who are hard of hearing or deaf.
This week, on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, MoAT located in Blue Springs, opened its doors to the public to come in and try out first hand the equipment that persons with disabilities use to be more independent in their homes, work or educational settings. Over 100 individuals crowded in, some driving from as far away as St. Louis. Many visitors spent over two hours trying out equipment, asking questions and gathering more information on how to access resources for their clients or loved ones.
MoAT staff works with school districts, vocational rehabilitation agencies, non-profit disability organizations, physicians, therapists, families and others to make sure that individuals with disabilities are safe and independent in their communities. The majority of programs and services available through MoAT are available at no charge to the individual.
If you would like more information on MoAT, or assistive technology for persons with disabilities, please feel free to contact the main number 816-655-6700 or the toll-free in state phone: 800-647-8557.
