Trailridge Robotics Teams Capture Awards At Regional Event

November 30, 2013

The Trailridge Elementary School Challengers and Team Aluminum recently captured awards at the Greater Kansas City FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Qualifier, held Nov. 23 at Kearney Junior High School. The Challengers won the Project-Research Award, and Team Aluminum won the Robot Design-Mechanical Design Award.

Both teams also qualified for the FLL (FIRST LEGO League) Regional Championship to be held at Union Station Jan. 18. To qualify for the championship, a team must score well in all three judging categories -- project, core values and robot design -- as well as have a score in the top 60 percent on the robot game.

The Challengers are a sixth-grade team within the Timberbot Robotics Program at Trailridge Elementary. Jayne Hartwig, a fifth-grade teacher at Trailridge, and her husband, Michael, coach the Challengers. Team Aluminum also meets at Trailridge, is sponsored by Lee’s Summit West High School Team Titanium and is coached by Diana Fuehrer and Stephen Crossland. LSWHS Team Titanium members mentor both teams.

On Dec. 7, the two other Trailridge Timberbot robotics teams, the Problem Solverz and Megabots, will compete at a tournament at Bingham Middle School in Independence.
