Two Lee's Summit Residents Crash Corvette Into House

By Ronda A. Montgomery, JCSP

On 05-31-2011 at approximately 2:15 a.m. a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was on routine patrol traveling westbound on 150 Highway west of Kelly Road when he observed a vehicle traveling east on 150 Highway that appeared to be in excess of the posted 45 mph speed limit.

The deputy immediately turned around in an attempt to catch up to the motorist and observed the vehicle turn left at the intersection of 150 Highway and Horridge Road.  As the deputy entered the intersection of Horridge Road and 139th, he observed the Corvette upside down against the residence in the 13000 block of 139th Street.  At that time, he could see the vehicle was on the front porch of the residence.
Shortly thereafter, Kansas City Fire Department, Lee’s Summit Fire Department and Lee’s Summit EMS responded.  The driver, a 39 year old man from Lee’s Summit, was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  It is unknown if he was wearing his seat belt. In addition, the passenger, a 32 year old female also from Lee’s Summit, was taken to a different area hospital with several broken bones and other injuries, although none believed to be life threatening.  She was found to be wearing her seatbelt and was extricated from the vehicle.

The preliminary investigation has revealed the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, ran off the north side of 139th street, struck and embankment, and went airborne for approximately 70 feet until it struck the residence in the 13000 block of 139th Street.  The crash is still under investigation.  However, speed and alcohol are believed to be a factor in the crash.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the residence.  The names of the occupants of the vehicle are not being released pending possible charges.
