Victim Removed From Collapsed Trench (Update to the October 24th Trench Collapse)
October 25, 2013
By Assistant Chief Jim Eden Lee’s Summit Fire Department
Lee’s Summit, MO – On Friday, October 25, 2013 at 3:10 p.m. emergency crews removed the body of 49 year-old Brian D. Allen from the trench that collapsed on him at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. The victim was part of a crew working on installing a sewer line to a house in the 1000 block of SW Drake in southern Lee’s Summit.
Rescue crews from the Lee’s Summit Fire Department, Kansas City Missouri Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Unit, and Central Jackson County Fire Protection District worked continuously for more than twenty four hours to reach and remove the victim at the bottom of the nearly fifteen foot deep trench. The safety of the crews was a constant concern as changing conditions in the trench and the type of soil made the recovery operation challenging and complicated. Crews worked within a very small area under the always present danger of additional collapses.
After OSHA investigators and the Lee’s Summit Police Department completed their scene investigation and emergency crews departed, Codes Administration with the City of Lee’s Summit had the trench filled in so it would not be a hazard to the neighborhood.
