What do you think about the state of our city?
September 10, 2010
By Debbie Van Pelt / News Editor
Mayor Randy Rhoads gave his first “State of the City” address to the community Thursday evening during a City Council work session. We want you to be informed, so the Tribune has made the text of Rhoads’ entire speech available on our website, www.lstribune.net. We are also interested in hearing your thoughts and opinions about our city government, so please drop us a note after you’ve read Mayor Rhoads’ speech.
Some of the key highlights of the speech were: • Lee’s Summit has received positive national recognition. • Neighboring communities are suffering a 5-10% decrease in sales tax revenue, while Lee’s Summit saw a 1% increase for the first half of the fiscal year. • Lee’s Summit issued 105 new single family housing permits from January 1 through July 31st, compared to 55 for the same period last year. • The City has made investments and advancements in technology, most notably in the area of Public Safety. • A new communications tool, called Nixle.com is able to send email and text messages to keep citizens informed. • Numerous improvements have been made to our infrastructure. • The November 2nd “No Tax Increase General Obligation Bond Election will address projects regarding public safety, infrastructure and transportation.
Mayor Rhoads said, “If you only have one take-away message from my address, it should be this: Lee’s Summit’s future is brighter than ever.” Tell us – Do you agree or disagree?
