Wind-driven Snowstorm Tonight Adds to Danger, Difficulty
February 25, 2013
KANSAS CITY – Round Two of the February 2013 snowstorms has again targeted Kansas City for a direct hit. MoDOT crews have spent the past three days pushing back snow from Thursday’s storm, clearing shoulders and intersections so that there is room to push the next massive assault.
This storm, expected to arrive around sunset this evening, may be worse for travelers because of wind-driven snow that was less a factor in last week’s storm. MoDOT urges motorists to stay off highways once the snowstorm begins.
The high rate of snowfall coupled with 30 mph winds can create drifts that will seriously challenge even four-wheel-drive vehicles. The greatest opportunity for plow crews to clear the highways throughout this storm is if no other vehicles are on the highways in our path.
MoDOT urges motorists to postpone travel until the storm has passed unless it is a dire emergency. If you do venture out, slide off the roadway and it is not an emergency, stay in your vehicle. MoDOT will discourage towing of vehicles during the height of the storm unless they are in the roadway during rush hour.
Crashed vehicles will be moved as quickly as possible. Motorist Assist and Emergency Response will not be changing blown out tires on the roadway, and will urge motorists to drive their vehicles off the highway for assistance.
Abandoned vehicles again will be towed as quickly as tow operators can respond. For more information about highway conditions, go to www.modot.org and click on the Traveler Information Map.
