After 20+ years working in the healthcare field, running medical clinics and billing offices, Laura Olvera decided to start her own company – Value Healthcare Consulting, LLC®.
Laura saw a definite need for consulting in her line of work, so she began her own consulting business, helping streamline and fine-tune operations and processes in independently-owned dental and medical offices – the behind-the-scenes things that patients don’t see, but from which they highly benefit.
Doctors only get about 1 semester of learning how to run a business and that’s where Laura’s business steps in. She enjoys educating the doctors and staff in implementing successful procedures tailored to their offices.
Laura explains, “My goal is to enable doctors to have a successful independently-owned business and not feel they have to join or become employed by a corporately-owned entity.”
Laura offers a free half-hour consultation to discuss her potential client’s challenges and understand their vision for about the next five years. Then, she identifies areas where her company can help the client’s office make the biggest positive growth.
There are three main areas where Value Healthcare Consulting assists clients. The first is how an independently-owned dental or medical practice can increase their revenue by analyzing the components associated with cash flow, inventory control, and overall workflow. Second is through staff training – emphasizing the importance of first and last impressions by patients and offering on-site workshops. Third is with strategic planning for operations, marketing, and compliance issues.
In order to identify her target market, while employed in the medical field, Laura was involved in several medical manager groups, so she had many connections that allowed her to get her foot in the door for her medical office consulting.
To help her with all of the components of starting a business, Laura took the FastTrac® program through the UMKC Small Business & Technology Development Center, an intensive one-month course. Surprisingly, a homework assignment led her to her first dental client!
Laura’s approach to helping her clients is superior to other consultants because she provides hands-on, customized assistance through a value-added approach, bringing in trusted advisors as needed to assist or take the lead in their area of expertise. After rolling out and streamlining new procedures, Laura’s company returns to make sure they are working or whether they need some tweaking. The continued support Laura provides is key to her continued success and the success of her clients.
Laura founded Dental Manager Network Society™ and serves as Executive Director. This is a non-profit group that was modeled off of the medical manager groups of which Laura is a member, and its members meet four times a year. The purpose of the Dental Manager Network Society™ is to provide a “networking, mentorship, and educational forum to support the professional needs of dental managers and/or key administrative staff in Missouri and Kansas.”
Some advice that Laura has for budding entrepreneurs is to take the Fast Trac® program through UMKC. It was a real eye-opener for her and covers everything a new business owner needs to know, such as creating a business plan, budgeting, and marketing.
“Have a passion for what you want to do because that will sustain you through the ups and downs of the process,” Laura advises. “Reach out to other women business owners and find a mentor that can help steer you in the right direction and allow you to have someone to bounce ideas off of.”
To supplement Laura’s mark in the business world, she created The Synergy Connection, LLC™ which provides management and administrative services to nonprofit professional associations. Her first client being the Dental Manager Network Society™.
With all Laura has going on, you might be surprised to find out that she does have free time! She and her husband, Don (married for over 30 years) enjoy travel and photography. She also likes to read mysteries, play tennis, and go to movies. Laura is a member of Chapter KH P.E.O. and serves this philanthropic group in many important ways.
