Day one of the 2013 MIAA Basketball Tournament is in the books after four entertaining games were played Thursday inside the historic Municipal Auditorium. Day one belongs to the men, with day two on Friday will be the women's turn to take the floor.
First game of the day saw top seed Fort Hays State win 79-60 over Missouri Southern. The Lions of Mo. Southern led early 5-0 and 11-6 but strong shooting from the Tigers took over from there. Fort Hays State will play Northwest Missouri State in the semi-final round on Saturday. The Bearcats advanced by winning a back and forth Slugfest with Northeastern State 69-65.
The night session started with 2nd seeded UCM Mules topping Pitt State 69-63. The Mules were led by Lee's Summit native Matt Webb with 15 points. Webb, a 6'8 Senior attended Summit Christian Academy, Pitt State was led in scoring by Grandview native JaVon McGee with 22 points.
The long day ended with an upset as 6th seeded Central Oklahoma beat 3rd seed Washburn. The win gives UCO the right to play Central Missouri at 2:15 on Saturday. Friday's four game slate of women's action starts at 12Noon with Washburn playing Northwest Missouri State, then Truman meets Emporia State followed by Central Missouri and Missouri Western and Northeastern St finishes the day up with Fort Hays State.
