Kansas City - An ALL STAR City In 2012 Update

July 14, 2012

By Fred Liggett

From The Games and Galas, to the Bats and Balls, Festivals and Fans, Celebrities and Concessions, the excellent events surrounding the 83rd All Star game in Kansas City have come and gone. A sold out Kaufman Stadium played host monday night to the Home Run Derby. Many celebrities were on hand sunday night for the annual celebrity softball game, but monday brought out a few more. Country stars, Zac Brown Band, performed before Baseball’s best hitters displayed their talents to over 40,000 in attendance. The Derby started with 8 entries, when down to the final four two of them were Ex-KC Royals. Both Carlos Beltran and Jose Bautista made it that far but neither won the derby trophy. That honor went to Detroit’s Prince Fielder. The derby’s farthest hit home run was by Mark Trumbo of California who hit one 490+ feet high atop the Royals Hall of Fame building.

Tuesday brought out the Red Carpet for an All Star Parade along a route set in the Country Club Plaza. Many baseball fans braved the heat to see their favorite ballplayers ride past them while sitting on the back of a chevrolet convertible. The loudest cheer came when Royals All Star Billy Butler went by the reviewing stand. Many team’s mascots were on hand to give out candy and team merchandise to Parade attendees. Then tuesday night a crowd of 40,933 can say they were there to witness the first All Star game in Kansas City in 39 years. While the game was not close after the National League scored 5 runs in the first inning everyone at the K had a good time. Royals all star Billy Butler went 0-2 in the 8-0 loss for the American League. Royals alumni Melky Cabrera won the Game’s MVP honors. The crowd was treated to a performance by Country star Luke Bryan and a fly over by a B-2 provided by nearby Whiteman Air Force Base during pre-game ceremonies.

On a personal level my preparation for Sunday morning’s All Star game Charity 5K Fun Run paid off as I completed my first ever 5K in just 35 minutes and 32 seconds. I walked away proud of my achievement in addition to my commemorative 5K Fun Run medal. An All Star game record number of entries, over 8,000, competed in the race. Everyone had a good time meeting Ex-Royals, TV star Alison Sweeney and music stars David Cook and Kristen Chenowith. I thank you for following my journey to the “finish” line over the past month. Next week we cap our All Star coverage by posting the best comments from Lee’s Summit residents on their favorite moments and memories of All Star week 2012.
