Kansas City - An ALL STAR City In 2012 Updated
July 21, 2012
By Fred Liggett
Whenever there is a big event in a person’s life there is a good chance that they will leave with many memories from this event. In this case the big event was the first All Star game being played in Kansas City in 39 years. Several Lee’s Summit residents were there to enjoy the Futures game, Home Run derby and All Star Game. A few of them shared with me their favorite moment from these events.
Trisha Drape- My favorite All Star memory was right at the very end of the All Star game sitting at Kaufman Stadium with my daughters, Taylor and Kacey. The game ended, and I started to get up to leave, but both of them stopped me, they said they weren’t ready for it to be over. They just wanted to sit for a while and soak it up for a bit longer.
Jacqueline Sharp- My favorite All Star memory has to be when the whole crowd booed Robinson Cano during the HR Derby because he didn’t put Billy Butler on the AL team. It was refreshing to see our fans stand up for our player, our team and our city!
Ryan Smarr- I will always remember when Robinson Cano stepped to the plate for the HR Derby. Back and forth of boos and cheers every time he missed a Home run. It was a great week all around.
Doug Van Dyke- Having grown up here as a royals fan in 1970’s and 80’s it was fun to so much enthusiasm at Royals Stadium. I remember thinking if we can draw 40,000+ for a softball game can you imagine the amount of support this town would provide a contending baseball team.
I agree with everyone’s assessment above. My own favorite memories include running in my very first 5K run and finishing it. I also enjoyed watching the HR Derby including the 490 Foot bomb by Mark Trumbo. I will always remember the B2 flying over the stadium and the largest USA flag covering the field before the All-Star Game. It was then I had a chill go down my back as an All Star game had finally come to my hometown and I was there to experience it. The Stars may be gone and the Lights turned out but the many Moments and Memories of the 2012 All Star events will be remembered for years to come.
