Kansas City: An ALL STAR City In 2012

July 7, 2012

By Fred Liggett

The Countdown to Kansas City hosting the ALL Star game is nearly down to zero days left. Many local baseball fans have been counting the days and weeks down since MLB commissioner Bud Selig came to Kansas City in the summer of 2010 to make it official that in 2012 Kansas City would be host to All Star game events. The two most anticipated events, the Home Run Derby and All Star game, are coming up on Monday and Tuesday. No matter how many home runs are hit on Monday night at the K, already there are some impressive numbers to go over. Over 550 cabs are ready to take fans around town and over 2,500 volunteers are available to help visitors all over the metro area. In addition to the popular events at night, All Star fans will be treated to Gatorade workout day Monday afternoon getting the chance to get up close to their favorite stars. Tuesday afternoon before heading to the stadium, the All Stars will be participating in the annual Red Carpet Parade taking place on the Country Club plaza. Network television coverage on Monday night’s Derby starts at 7:00 p.m., with the All Star Game Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.

While the memories of the 2012 All Star events are still a few days away, if you or someone you know has memories of the 1960 or 1973 All Star games hosted by Kansas City you’re invited to send us your comments and thoughts to editor@lstribune.net. After our four part series, we will print the best memories submitted.

On a personal level my preparation for Sunday’s All Star game charity 5K Fun Run continues. This past week didn’t go that well as I battle both mental and physical issues. After a recent practice I didn’t feel well and thought to myself maybe this is why you always hear before starting a new exercise routine to see your doctor. Physically I am still battling a toe injury I suffered while working the Downtown Days festival. Despite these setbacks I continue my plans to go forward and participate in this fun run and at the same time raise much needed funds for Stand Up 2 Cancer. For more information on the run and other all star game events log onto www.allstargame.com. I look forward to sharing with you next week the results of the derby, the game and my journey to the finish line as we continue our series on all the fun activities of All Star week in Kansas City.
