After defeating Ruskin Tuesday night 50-49, Coach Mike Hilbert commented, “I am telling you it is the most balanced season of high school basketball in Kansas City that I can remember. Everyone is about the same. Makes for close games.”
He didn’t realize how prescient those remarks would prove to be when his Broncos faced Liberty Friday night. The Broncos jumped to an early lead of 9-5. Liberty caught up and had a one point advantage at the half 25-24.
Beginning the second half, 2 points by Kenny Berry and 4 by Will Harrington helped the Broncos to a 30-28 lead. However, they finished the third quarter deadlocked at 35. The Broncos recaptured the lead at 45-42 with under 2 minutes remaining.
Liberty got within one, 45-44, advantage Broncos, and gained possession calling time out with 19 seconds remaining. They missed the go ahead shot. Kravish got the rebound and was fouled. He went to the line to shoot one and one. He made both shots giving the Broncos the lead and winning score of 47-44. Liberty missed a three-point attempt that would have put the game into overtime.
Will Harrington lead the team with 15 points, with Kenny Berry scoring 9.
Assistant coach Ryan Miller commented, "Kravish made some free throws that were key. Harrington got some keep points to start the second half. The boys didn't quit and we had some great support from the crowd."
Coach Hilbert, you didn’t know how right you would be.
