Festa stops 34 of 35 as Mavs stay undefeated

The Mavericks stayed undefeated on the season moving to 4-0-0 with all four wins on the road.
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona – Goaltender Gerry Festa stopped 34 of 35 shots in regulation and overtime and five of eight attempts in the shootout, and the Missouri Mavericks defeated the Arizona Sundogs, 2-1, Friday night at Tim’s Toyota Center. The Mavericks stayed undefeated on the season moving to 4-0-0 with all four wins on the road. Mavericks’ forward Nathan O’Nabigon scored the Mavericks’ lone goal in regulation and Andrew Courtney earned the game-winning goal in the shootout. The teams faceoff again Saturday night at Tim’s Toyota Center at 9:05 p.m. central to close out their three-game series.
“A great team performance tonight,” said Mavericks’ Head Coach Scott Hillman. “We lost (Ed) McGrane early in the game, and we were already without Ryan Jardine. Everyone stepped up tonight and gritted out this win. I thought the second period was the best period we have played all year.”
The Mavs and Sundogs skated to a scoreless first period. Both teams had their chances though as the teams combined for 26 shots in the period.
O’Nabigon unlocked the scoreless tie at the 4:15 mark of the second period when he jammed the puck past Sundogs’ goaltender Levente Szuper. John-Scott Dickson and Dale Mahovsky each assisted on the play and each kept their respective scoring streaks going with the assists. Missouri dominated the shot chart in the second period outshooting Arizona 18-6 and 30-20 through two periods.
The Sundogs tied the game on a power play goal in the third period. Tyler Butler proved to be the only player to get a puck past Festa when he scored at the 4:05 mark. Kyle Hood and Daymen Rycroft earned the assists on the play, but it was the last goal until the shootout.
Through seven rounds of the shootout, the Sundogs answered every one of the Mavericks goals until Festa stopped David Nimmo’s bid in the eighth round. Lachlan MacIntosh, Brandon Coccimiglio, Sebastien Thinel and Courtney all scored in the shootout. Courtney had the game-winning goal in his first game this season.
Festa finished with 34 saves on 35 shots in regulation and overtime and he stopped five of the Sundogs’ eight shooters in the shootout. It marked his first win of the season in his first start. The Mavericks allowed a goal after the first period for the first time this season on Butler’s marker in the third period. Missouri was unable to score on the power play in five chances and the Mavericks stopped six of the Sundogs’ seven opportunities.
The Mavericks and Sundogs will close out their three-game series Saturday night, and the Mavericks will finish their season-long six-game road trip on November 4 against the Wichita Thunder. The Mavericks home opener is Saturday, November 5 against the Thunder. Missouri plays home games at the state-of-the-art Independence Events Center where parking is always free.
